Kentucky Derby Day Pie

I don’t remember when or how I started making this Kentucky Derby Day Pie, but I’ve had the recipe for years now and it’s hands down my FAVORITE PIE EVER.

It’s also the most requested dessert at our Thanksgiving dinner because it’s that good. In fact, it’s become quite a Thanksgiving tradition in my family.

I know historically, it’s made for the Kentucky Derby in May, but seeing as how we live in Arkansas and don’t really participate in the derby day festivities, we like to make it for other holidays throughout the year.

I’ve even had several family members request it as a birthday dessert instead of birthday cake. Once you try this simple, easy and delicious pie recipe you’ll be hooked.

This Kentucky Derby Day Pie is so easy to make and is basically a chocolate chip pecan cookie in a pie shell. How could that NOT be good?? Be careful though because this pie is really rich, so a little goes a long way.

Feel free to switch out the pecans for walnuts and add to add a little Kentucky Bourbon if you wish, but just know that it’s perfectly delicious without it as well.

So why not stop what you’re doing right now and GO MAKE THIS PIE! You can thank me later. And check out the links below for more easy and delicious dessert recipes.

  1. Looks yummy! If I try it, I think I might add toffee bits to mimic one of my favorite cookies - Pepperidge Farms Lexington cookies.
  2. This is the same recipe that I made for years. I had misplaced it and so glad to find it here. It’s a simple version and delicious! Thank you.
  3. This is the very recipe that I have been making for many years. It's definitely a favorite dessert to all who eat it. Your recipe is the very same one that I follow, and it's perfect every time. Thank you for sharing it. A google search for this recipe is how I found your blog. I enjoy it. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. By the way, I refrigerate it and then microwave each slice for just a few seconds before serving. Otherwise, it's really thick to eat.
    1. I have used either milk chocolate or semi sweet chocolate and I like it both ways. I have been making the same recipe for years except I use 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar. I live in Kentucky just south of Louisville and I am making 16 of these derby pies for my baking customers. They are always a big hit.
  4. Hi! I baked this tonight and it was in the oven for probably one hour and 20 minutes and it still wasn’t done! Any reason you know why this could be? We have a gas oven and I consider it to be pretty hot...
    1. I am having the same issue. It's been in the oven for more than an hour and it's done on the top but it's not getting done in the middle. I have no clue what is going on.
  5. I love this pie, too. Just an FYI..in your description you said “I’m not from their” it should be “there”. Sorry to edit you.
  6. My memory is derby pie with nuts, chocolate chips, and butterscotch chips. Incredible pie! Haven't found a good recipe for that pie though. Anyone add butterscotch chips to this pie?
  7. Used to make this all the time and couldn’t find the recipe I used to use until now! I can’t remember if I used to put it in the fridge. We won’t be eating it for a couple of days. Should I leave it out. Weather is cool now but wasn’t sure what you do beyond a day. Thanks so much!

  8. I can’t wait to try this tomorrow! I did refrigerate mine and then will take your advice on warming it! I used softened butter instead of melted. That may be why others aren’t getting done. I have a great sugar free banana walnut muffin recipe, and I had the same problem. It called for melted butter. It turns into a gooey muffin. Thanks for the recipe and Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. I have made this pie successfully for years, but the last few times the butter from the pie, not the crust because I don't use butter for the crust, leaks out of the pie as it is baking. I haven't changed oven, ingredients (other than maybe brand of butter) but don't have any idea why this is happening. Do you? Thanks for any help you can offer.
  10. OMG I've been looking for a Kentucky Derby Pie recipe for years! Never been able to find anything. We use to serve this at the trees room I worked at in high school.
  11. I’ve made this a couple of times. It’s delicious and the crust is not the important part. I used frozen and homemade and both were good. The frozen was a deep dish so I had to cook about 10 minutes longer.
  12. I have this in my oven right now and I can’t even describe how good it smells 🤤

  13. I’ve been making this recipe for a few years. Everyone has told me how good it was and I should enter it into the county fair. Well I did and won first place!

  14. So I was so excited to make this pie, pregnancy cravings and all. But I must have done something wrong, all the chocolate settled to the bottle and the top is a cake like consistency. I thought it would be a more gooey pecan pie like consistency. The flavor is good just not what I was imagining. Any ideas?
  15. I made this pie for family night. Set timer for an hour. Usually I will check on pie as it bakes, but didn't. One hour was too long for my oven. It was hard as a rock. We had a good laugh. 45 minutes would be better in my oven. I was disappointed that I let it bake too long.
