Make Your Own Homemade Dinner Rolls
Nothing reminds me of my grandma more than homemade dinner rolls. Unfortunately, she never wrote any of her recipes down so I’ve had to improvise along the way including with these rolls.
This is actually the dough recipe from my Homemade Ham & Cheese Pockets and they are simply amazing.
If you’ve never tried making your own rolls, I would encourage you to give it a try. They really are easy and blow any store bought roll out of the water in my humble opinion.
This recipe makes 24 rolls, but you can easily cut it in half to only make 12 if you need too. Keep in mind that if you do end up with extra you can freeze them for later. Also, you can substitute lard, coconut oil or butter for the shortening, if you so desire. Let the baking commence!
How to Make Homemade Dinner Rolls:
makes 24 rolls
In large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast into warm water.
Add milk, sugar, shortening, egg, salt and 4 cups flour. Stir well.
Slowly stir in remaining flour (only add as much as needed) until soft dough forms.
Turn onto floured surface and knead 5 minutes.
Place dough in bowl and cover with tea towel. Let sit in a warm place to rise 30 minutes.
Punch dough down slightly. Divide into 24 balls and place in large baking pan.
Cover with clean towel and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400 and bake 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Have you ever substituted butter for the shortening in this recipe?
I haven’t personally, but I think it would work out okay.
The picture shows white rolls. You don’t specify what kind of flour to use in your recipe. Would it be an even exchange to use wheat flour instead of all purpose flour?
I would do half and half.
Can you make the dough and freeze it?
I haven’t tried it, but I believe it would be fine.
Thank you for the wonderful recipes. I am going to try them today!
At what point can you freeze these rolls?
You can freeze before or after cooking.
Hi, I have made these very yummy rolls, but could it be, that there is a mistake in the ingredients list?
The list say, it should be 6-8 cups flour, but later it only says to add 4 cups.
What about the other 2-4 cups?
Hi Andrea,
The instructions read as follows:
Step 2: Add milk, sugar, shortening, egg, salt and 4 cups flour. Stir well.
Step 3: Slowly stir in remaining flour (only add as much as needed) until soft dough forms.
Hope this helps!
Since shortening has proven to be soooo bad for you, what can you substitute instead?
Sorry. Just read what you said about butter instead of shortening. But, I don’t think the amounts of butter versus shortening are the same. Years ago I substituted butter for shortening and the cookies came out a slimy mess. Any ideas?
I’ve substituted them interchangeably without problem in this recipe.
Large is by perspective so….
9×13????
If you halved what would you use for a pan_?
9×9? 8x8_?
Thank you!
Yes, large would be 9×13.
These rolls are just like my grandmas!! Sooooo good. I love them and plan to make them again and again!!
