Homemade Spaghettios

Did you enjoy canned Spaghettios when you were a kid? I know I did, which is why I’m excited to share a recipe for making this nostalgic dish from scratch. It’s a more grown up version than the canned variety, using real food ingredients like tomato sauce, garlic, onions and Parmesan cheese, but its still simple to make.

If you have kids who like canned pasta, but you want to start cooking more from scratch, this is a great place to start. They probably won’t notice the different and you’ll rest easy knowing that you are feeding your family a budget-friendly, nourishing meal.

Ingredients for Homemade Spaghettios:

  • small ring-shaped pasta (anellini or ditalini)
  • butter
  • garlic
  • onion
  • tomato sauce
  • chicken broth
  • tomato paste
  • sugar
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • cheddar cheese
  • Parmesan cheese

How to Make Homemade Spaghettios:

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Add pasta and cook according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

Add the minced garlic and chopped onion.

Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent or about 5 minutes.

Stir in the tomato sauce, chicken broth, tomato paste, sugar, salt, and black pepper.

Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan cheese until melted and well combined.

Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and stir until the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce. Cook for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
