Did you know that Americans throw away an estimated 30-40 percent of their food each year? That equals more than 20 lbs of food per person per month. (source) To think about that number is staggering. I won’t deny that I throw away food, but I do make an effort to use my scraps whenever possible.

Having chickens and a dog that I can feed scraps too helps tremendously, but there are a ton of other ways that I can put them to good use. Since uses for kitchen scraps isn’t exactly common knowledge like it used to be, I thought I would put together a list of 20 Creative Ways to use Kitchen Scraps. Through this list, I hope that you gain a few new ideas and are encouraged to reduce your own percentage of food waste.

  1. When I was a kid my mum would do this at the end of the day. She'd go through all the scraps and stuff. Our rabbits would get the potato peelings and anything else salvageable would get used. We keep a bowl in the fridge for extra veggies and meat from dinner plates that go into a weekend soup. Not worth wasting anything, not with money being tight.
  2. I'm excited to find ways to be less wasteful. My mother was a wonderful person at doing these type of things, however I lost her 10 months ago and my entire world changed.
