Homemade Refried Beans

You guys know that I love making homemade versions of store-bought items to save money and I’ve been wanting to make my own homemade refried beans for a while now, but haven’t had the time.

Then last week I made up a batch of my Slow Cooker Pinto Beans and decided to give it a try with the leftover cooked beans.

I normally freeze the leftovers to use in chili, but this time I’m making them into refried beans for my favorite Bean & Cheese Freezer Burritos.

Since I already had cooked beans on hand, the process was really simple and the results were amazing. Seriously, I may never buy canned refried beans again.

Things are just way better when you make them yourself, you know? Plus, these beans are freezer-friendly which means I could make up several batches to keep on hand for whenever I need them. Sweet!

How to Make Homemade Refried Beans:

Mash beans with potato masher or blender until desired consistency is reached.

Add oil and spices.

Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until desired thickness is obtained. Beans will thicken as they cool. You may add water or chicken broth if beans are too thick.

How to Freeze Homemade Refried Beans:

Once beans have cooled, spoon them into a labeled freezer bag or other freezer container and place them in the freezer.

Beans will keep in the freezer for 3-6 months.

When you are ready to use, simply place the beans overnight in the fridge to thaw or place the container of frozen beans in a bowl of warm water until thawed.

  1. I will be trying this very soon! Refried beans are on my list of canned items to make myself from now on. I am not online very often, but when I am, I always come here for new frugal living ideas. So glad I found your site. 🙂
  2. Frozen refried beans are so so so so so good. They did give my fiance Eva sleep farts, the ones that are so loud they wake them up and they wonder what happened and why you're laughing at them, but the beans were so good I think it was worth it.
    1. I make these too but when I soak my beans I change the water before cooking and before I season them I change the water one more time . I swear it helps. But otherwise this recipe is fantastic and this summer I’m preserving all kinds of food and refried beans are in my freezer awaiting those cold winter knights of chips and bean dip in front of the fire .
      1. Sorry about the typos. I meant to say nights in front of the fire and I forgot to give it a five star whichI meant to do . Does anyone know how to edit?
