Gardening Journal – May

This Spring has been a cold and wet one which has definitely been affecting the garden. We even started the month off with the first ever recorded snowfall in May! The past couple weeks have been warm though and I was (finally!) able to get my tomato plants into the ground. But now I’m having problems with the birds eating them!! Anyone have any advice for this? I think we might either buy bird tape or one of those balls that are supposed to scare them away. At first I thought it was slugs, but then I saw a bird literally ripping limbs off of my poor plants! Makes me sooo mad!!

Anyway, our garden is finally all planted and mulched. We have four 4ft wide sections with paths in between. This section has our potatoes, onions and peas.

This section has tomatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes and okra.

And this section is all tomatoes.

And this last section has our corn and beans. You can also see some of our strawberry plants on the far left. I’ve been picking small handfuls every few days.

Okra:

Sweet potato:

Bell Pepper:

Pimento Pepper:

Tomato:
That’s about it for now.
I can’t wait to start harvesting everything!

What’s growing in your garden?

We've got a huge garden this year! We made it bigger this year so I'm really excited to see how it does. We have corn, tomatoes, potato, lettuce, spinach, carrots, cabbage, onion, blueberries, asparagus, strawberries, peppers, squash, pumpkin, watermelon and peas. Haha! Everything is doing really well so far!! Here was my last gardening update on my blog. We've since planted everything in the ground and gotten a bunch of plants. I'm going to post a new update soon. http://vernamichelle.wordpress.com/2013/05/08/garden-2013/

Nothing growing in Northern Wisconsin yet! We are still too cold. I hope to get some seeds in the ground this weekend though!

Looking really good! I like that you planted flowers in with them. We still have to get our tomato seedlings and beans into the ground. We have growing in our garden (and ready for harvest) kale, collards, spinach, garlic, lettuce. Also growing but not ready are peas, potatoes, more radishes, cauliflower and broccoli, and carrots. We just harvested our onions last week!

I wanted to grow more flowers this year, but none of mine from seed made it so we just have the marigolds at the edges of the peppers and tomatoes for now. Sounds like you've harvested a lot! I planted our onion sets in February when do you think they will be ready to harvest? I've never grown them before and I have no idea!
