7 Frugal Things I Did Last Month – May 2015

Check out some of the frugal things that I did last month including thrifting and cutting my families hair!

I love reading other people’s tips, tricks and habits about saving money so I thought I would share some of the simple things that I do each month to save. I may also add in a few frugal fails to show you how I mess up sometimes. That should be entertaining, right?? Okay so here we go with some frugal things I did last month.

Shopped at the Thrift Store

I don’t get to go thrifting as much as I would like these days, but I was able to stop at one of my favorite stores last month and I scored big! I got everything pictured here for $17 which is a great deal considering the price tag on the Duplo set says $18.97. (They sell for around $25 now so I’m thinking this is an older set.)

Hosted a Garage Sale

My sister, mom and I have a garage sale every year and normally do pretty well because my mom lives on a busy street. I had a ton of stuff to sell including some furniture so I ended up making a few hundred bucks which is AwEsOmE! I also bought a kids wooden table and chair set and maxi dress from my sister. Score!

Shopped Craigslist

Since the house that we are moving into is almost three times the size of our current home we’ve been scouring Craigslist daily for inexpensive deals. We bought this wicker set for our new sunroom for only $275 which is an excellent deal considering patio furniture is CrAzY expensive.

Used Ibotta

There are a ton of grocery rebate apps out there, but the one I’ve made the most with is Ibotta. I earn money with it almost every week. All you do is check the app while you are making your grocery list and make note of any of the items that you want to purchase. (The best deals are when you have a coupon to pair with the rebate). Then when you get home simply unlock the offers on the app, scan your items and upload your receipt to the app.

You can earn PayPal cash or gift cards and even get bonuses when other people sign up through your referral link. They also have a lot of non-brand specific rebates including milk, bread, eggs, cereal, etc. Click here to sign up and start getting cash back today!

Went to the Library

I went to the library a few times this month and checked out some books for myself and a few dvds and books for my three-year old. My son and I LOVE to read and by using the library instead of buying new we save TONS of money. I also like to check out movies and TV shows for my husband and I to watch.

Cut My Families Hair

We buzz my husband and son’s hair once every six weeks or so and I love it. My husband bought his clippers for around $35 before we got married five years ago and hasn’t paid to get his hair cut since. I also cut my 13 month old little girl’s hair this month which was a tad intimidating, but I don’t think I screwed it up too bad.

Collected Free Moving Boxes

We moved last month and I absolutely hated the idea of having to pay for boxes so I started asking around. We ended up getting a ton of free boxes from Chick-fil-A, Marvin’s Grocery Store, a liquor store and my friend’s elementary school. Yea baby! I did end up having to pay for tape though…

What frugal things did you do this month?

We did a garage sale with my sister and mom too this last weekend. At my parents house since they are two blocks off the main road. Location makes a huge difference.

I would love to cut my daughters' hair, but I'm scared I'll mess up. My youngest always gets her hair in her face even when I pull it up. That's great you found free boxes to move! I remember trying to find free boxes when we moved a few years ago and we had no such luck. They can get expensive too!

I cut the hair of everyone in my family. I was intimidated at first too, but I did a search for tutorials and it really helped. Search for how to cut for each person's hair type and from there it's just a matter of practice. Start early while they still don't care what they look like and you'll be a pro in no time. I even cut my own hair now!

Awesome scores! I just love Craigslist and have gotten quite a few things from there. I would LOVE to have a yard sale here but we live out in the country and I don't think we would get enough traffic to make it worth it.
