Ham Bone Soup

We recently had our bible study group over for dinner and I cooked a bone-in ham. Once I removed all of the meat, I wrapped the bone in foil and popped it in the fridge for making soup later in the week.

I’d never actually made soup using a ham bone, but I hated to throw it away when I knew I could put it to good use. The bone makes a rich broth and adds amazing flavor to soups. I love recipes that use items that people would normally throw away such as my Slow Cooker Chicken Broth. This kind of cooking is becoming a dying art which is why I’m sharing this recipe with you today.

Traditionally, ham bone soup is made using white beans, but I don’t keep those on hand so I used pinto. I would encourage you to adjust this recipe to fit your own tastes as well. If you want a creamier base then you can remove a few cups of the soup at the end of your cooking time and blend it until smooth in a blender. Then mix it back in to your slow cooker before serving.

How to Make Slow Cooker Ham Bone Soup:

Place ham bone in slow cooker.

Add vegetables and water.

Cook on low 7 hours and then remove ham bone.

Add diced ham and cook an additional 1-2 hours.

Season to taste and serve.

  • 1 leftover ham bone
  • 1 onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 large carrot diced
  • 1 - 15 oz can corn
  • 2 large red potatoes chopped
  • 2.5 cups cooked pinto beans
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups diced ham
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  • Place ham bone in slow cooker.
  • Add vegetables and water.
  • Cook on low 7 hours and then remove ham bone.
  • Add diced ham and cook an additional 1-2 hours.
  • Season to taste and serve.

  1. I love making bean soup on a cold winter day. And yes, I do use the leftover ham bone to flavor the broth. I also always add a bay leaf at the start of cooking and I use navy beans, but like you I've used other beans occasionally. The soup and some crusty bread and butter is so satisfying.
  2. When I have a ham bone I make ham bone broth. This way if I am making a soup and do not have ham I can use the broth for ham flavor. My family actually likes it better because the ham flavor is in every bite.
  3. I use leftover gravy in my ham soup. It adds wonderful flavor. I sometimes use lentils & carrots. I love, love ham soup!
  4. My version is to use the ham bone and yellow snap beans. I use molasses and vinegar to make a sweet and sour soup. It’s pretty amazing. It’s what I grew up eating in my cold state of Minnesota. It might be of German or polish descent, I’m not sure.
  5. I make pea soup with the ham bone - oh so good, Ham bone, qt vegatable stock, minced onion, carrot slices, 1 pkg of dried split green peas. Put all into pot and bring to a boil then turn down to simmer and simmer for about 3 to 4 hours (will thicken as it cooks so you might want to stir every so often and will thicken even more when rest of it is put into fridge - just add some water and stir) Enjoy with buttered corn bread.
