All of us are subject to pest infestation in one way or another but, the real question is – how do you get rid of them without causing any harm to your home and pets? Impulsively, when we see a cockroach around the house, chemical sprays are the first thing that we think reach for even though most of us know that chemicals are harmful. The reason is we think that natural ways are ineffective, or we don’t know how to prepare them. So here is a list of 9 Home Remedies for DIY Pest Control.
Ants mostly enter a home during rainy seasons and when the weather is warm. The ants that invade your home will damage your property, have bites that sting, and get into your food.
Cinnamon is an effective ant repellent because the smell discourages ants from entering the place. Add half teaspoon of cinnamon oil to a cup of water. Soak cotton balls in the mixture and keep it near the entry points. Repeat this until the ants are gone.
Roaches are considered to be some of the nastiest creatures that attack your home. They spread bacteria and diseases.
An easy solution is available in your kitchen to get rid of them. Bay leaves are used for fragrance during cooking. Luckily, cockroaches avoid the area that has this smell. Crush these leaves and sprinkle them in shelf corners and under the cushion.
Rats are dangerous as the diseases they spread via urine and feces can cause extensive damages to your property and health. Apart from the traditional traps, here is another home remedy.
In a bowl of water mix two spoons detergents and 2 cups of ammonia. Place it the area where rats frequently visit. They can’t stand the smell and will avoid visiting that area.
Bed bugs usually enter your home through luggage and other things you use while traveling. Unfortunately, home remedies only work when the infestation is at the beginning stages. If it’s severe, you will need to get help from professionals like NYCity Pest Control.
Vacuum the place thoroughly, and wash all your baggage and clothes in hot water. Dry them in sunlight. If there are any eggs on your mattress, get rid of it and buy new bedding.
Camphor and Basil plant
Houseflies will usually attack a place where there is a lack of cleanliness like exposed garbage, a sink full of dirty dishes and uncovered food. This is a pest that can cause harmful diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.

Place basil plants in your kitchen and porch
Mosquitoes can cause various fatal diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Many commercial products will keep the surroundings mosquito-free, but they have adverse effects. Apart from eliminating stagnated water there are other remedies.
Fill water in a spray bottle and crush few garlic cloves and put it inside the bottle. Spray around the house. The pungent smell will kill the mosquitoes.
Even though spiders don’t cause any harm, and many say they eat all the tiny insects around the house, some are disgusted by their presence.
In a spray bottle, fill water and mix 2-3 tablespoons of vinegar. Spray the solution on cracks and crevices around the house.
Termites are small pests, but the damage they cause to your property is significant. The worst thing is that they act slowly, and you won’t have a clue that they are affecting your property. If the infestation is critical, you have to get professional help.
Nematodes will release bacteria into the bodies of termites and kill them. These nematodes are not harmful to humans and pets. You can get them online or at the local hardware stores. Use them according to the instructions on the label.
Fleas can give you sleepless nights and your pets are often subject to attack. They can lay eggs anywhere in your house, plus their eggs turn into larvae and then finally fleas. So always clean your house regularly to keep fleas away.
Sprinkle boric acid on the inside and outside of your home including all your furniture during night time. Boric acid will dehydrate and dry them out. Next morning, vacuum the place thoroughly and throw the waste inside a sealed bag.
The main benefit of natural pest control methods is that it does not harm the environment and does not emit any harmful toxins. That said, if the pest infection gets out of hand then chemicals are your best option. So when pests attack your home, your first instinct should be to get rid of them the natural way.
